Report 11-211 to Board
RE: Full-Day Kindergarten Class Reorganization
ORIGINATORS:
Jennifer Adams, Director of Education
Walter Piovesan, Associate Director of Education
Janice McCoy, Superintendent of Human Resources
Frank Wiley, Superintendent of Instruction
PURPOSE:
1. To provide information with regard to the creation of an additional full day kindergarten
class through a re-organization of existing staff at Grant Public School.
BACKGROUND:
2. Grant Public School was initially allocated one full day kindergarten class for the 2011-
2012 school year. As of the fall reorganization date there were a total of 30 junior
kindergarten and senior kindergarten pupils enrolled in the class.
STATUS
:
4 Since September, the enrolment has grown to 25 junior kindergarten students and 10 senior
kindergarten students, for a total of 35 in the class. There is currently one teacher and one
ECE assigned to the Kindergarten class.
5. In order to address the large class size, staff considered various options that could enhance
student learning but would not require additional staff. The school has identified a workable
model that will require creating a split senior kindergarten/grade 1 class of 15 students.
This approach will allow for a reduction in the number of students in the kindergarten
class without the need for additional staffing.
6. The legislation does provide an exception to the requirement to appoint an Early Childhood
Educator (ECE) in one class in each school, where there are fewer than 16 students enrolled.
As a result, there is no requirement to assign an ECE to the second class being created.
7. Since the creation of the new class is being managed within the existing staff complement,
staff is providing this to the Board for information, rather than approval.
CONSULTATION:
8. The Superintendent of Instruction has been working with the School Principal and school
staff on the development of a solution to better meet the learning needs of the students. The
zone trustee has been apprised of the situation. The Principal has made the School Council
Chair aware of the situation and will be communicating with the parents of affected students
regarding the implementation of this change.
FINANCIAL IMPLICATIONS:
9. There are no financial implications associated with the staffing for this reorganization.
