My name is Tim Hayes and I am the Chair of the School Council at SCHS. I am
speaking to you tonight concerning the school closure issue and the impact
it is having on the school 1 represent. Although SCHS is not on the list
for closure, the effects of the school closure debate are having a major
effect on SCHS. Let me present a few facts:
SCHS is the second largest school in the OCDSB's district
' SCHS has defective washrooms, some of which are verging on being a
health hazard
' SCHS has many defective windows that leak cold air causing
discomfort for students and higher than necessary heating bills
' SCHS has a number of defective lockers causing security problems for
students
SCHS has poor decor
' In short, the poor physical condition of the infrastructure makes
SCHS a less than ideal learning environment.
The School is in need of desperate need of extensive renovations.
Failure to act now will result in further degradation which will
increase long term repair costs.
The failure to close schools has caused provincial money for renovations to
be frozen. This has a direct impact on SCHS for all the reasons outlined
above. I therefore urge the Board to make a rapid decision on school
closure to enable funds to be released so that schools like SCHS are brought
up to a proper state of repair.
Thank you for your attention and I sincerely hope you will take my words
into account when making your decision.
