OTTAWA CARMON
DISTRICT SCHOOL BOARD
TO: Chair and Members
of the Board
RE: Trustee Remuneration
DATE: 26 June 2000
Trustee Scott has given notice that she will move as follows at the 26 June 2000
Board meeting:
Whereas the Ontario government has recently held an independent review of remuneration
for members of the provincial legislature, which has recommended a substantial increase in
compensation, to approximately $100,000 per year;
Whereas an independent study of remuneration for municipal councillors in the new City of
Ottawa has recommended a substantial increase in compensation over that of any councillor
in the existing municipalities, to approximately $70,000 per year, apparently on the basis
of increased workload and quality of responsibilities as a result of municipal
amalgamation;
Whereas remuneration for school board members was arbitrarily fixed at $5,000 per year
beginning in 1998, with no review comparable to those conducted for MLA and municipal
councillor compensation;
Whereas school board members are, in many cases, responsible to more electors than
municipal politicians, provide governance to significantly larger organizations, administer
larger budgets, and increasingly require a high level of background knowledge and
understanding for effective decision - making;
THEREFORE BE TT RESOLVED THAT the Minister of Education be urged to initiate a
similar independent review of trustee remuneration, with a view to setting equitable
compensation rates for school board members to be elected in municipal elections in
November 2000.
