Re: Vacancy on the Nepean Public Library Board

PURPOSE:
1. To seek direction regarding a recent vacancy on the Nepean Library Board.
BACKGROUND:
2. Under the Public Libraries Act R.S.O. 1990, the Board is required to nominate two
candidates for appointment by the City of Nepean to the Nepean Public Library Board.
3. In May 1998, the City of Nepean appointed the Board's nominees Sandra Nolan and
Takis Zervas to the Nepean Public Library Board.
STATUS:
4. Mrs. Nolan recently submitted her resignation to the City of Nepean. The letter
informing the Board of her resignation is attached as Annex 1.
5. Only two applications were received after the last election for the Nepean Public
Library Board, in response to a newspaper advertisement inviting qualified candidates
to apply.
6. The term for library board members is concurrent with the term of office for board
members i.e. to the end of November 2000.
7. Staff has checked with the City of Nepean and library board meetings are scheduled
for May, June, July (tentative), September and October.
8. It would be possible to advertise in the local Nepean newspapers at a fairly reasonable
cost.
9. Staff require direction as to whether the position should be filled for the remainder of
the term.
