The School of Dance - a nationally -known seminar of learning
VISION
a
1. Crichton Street School as a multi -use, not - for - profit community centre for use
by New Edinburgh, surrounding communities, and the city:
Community activities: public meeting space, yoga classes, seniors'
euchre club, artist studios and exhibition space;
The School of Dance: the full program currently in place, with the
potential to expand into computer -based dance training, a state- of -the-
art Celia Franca dance studio;
And other users, with a preference for not - for - profit (day -care, health
clinics, School of Art computer animation program, Private elementary
school).
2. Residential development on part of the school yard.
PURPOSE
• We believe that a healthy community requires diversity in the way that
buildings are used. Increasingly, residential development is driving out more
varied uses;
• The community needs a meeting place and room for programs. Space is not
available anywhere nearby to serve as an adequate replacement for the
Lighthouse program space in Crichton Street School;
• The School of Dance is looking for a permanent home. Their current location
is rented and does not supply the appropriate and sufficient space;
• The Ottawa School of Art is looking for space for its computer animation
program, and is hoping to co- locate with other arts organizations;
• An RMOC study concluded that Ottawa is short of facilities for the arts (Carol
can help here);
• Public leaders have told us that they will increasingly need more community
satellite facilities, our goal is to operate as one of those satellite facilities for
the new city of Ottawa.

PROPOSAL
• We have formed a strong coalition as the core of the Crichton
CommunityCultural Centre;
• We have consulted lawyers and financial experts on the feasibility of the
proposal;
• We have held discussions with several residential developers to explore co-
operative development of the Crichton Community Cultural Centre;
• We have the capability to raise significant funds and we have commitments
in principle from different levels of government for significant grants and
contributions;
• Partner with a community sensitive residential developer for part of the land
and offer the OCDSB a fair market price for the Crichton School property;
and
• We propose that the OCDSB allow us an opportunity to purchase the
property at fair market value prior to formally tending the property for sale on
the open market.
