OTTAWA- CARLETON
DISTRICT SCHOOL BOARD
Report No. 99 -247 to the Board
Re: Area Review /School Closure Study
Trustees Request for a 90% Scenario
ORIGINATOR(S):
PURPOSE
Date November 8,1999
To respond to the Board's request for scenarios that illustrate a 90% loading of schools for
Quadrant C of the elementary school Area Review / School Closure Study.
BACKGROUND
2. At the meeting of October 25,1999, Board approved the following motion:
"That staff prepare a scenario for Quadrant C based on a 90% loading of schools" and "that
summaries of the two scenarios be provided to the Minister to clearly illustrate the impact of the
current accommodation formula."
STATUS
3. A 90% capacity utilization for Quadrant C elementary Schools would require an estimated
reduction of 682 and 782 surplus pupil places for the years 2000 and 2004 respectively.
4. Information attached as Appendix A summarizes the impact of two possible scenarios that would
achieve a 90% utilization factor for Quadrant C elementary schools. The scenarios, attached
assume that the Middle French Immersion program would not be provided in Quadrant C.
5. The schools identified for these scenarios do not represent staff recommended closures for the
elementary school Area Review / School Closure Study currently in progress for Quadrant C.
6. The schools identified for these scenarios do not reRresent School Study Committee (SSC)
recommended closures for the elementary school Area Review / School Closure Study currently
in progress.
7. Scenario one assumes the closure of Overbrook and Robert Hopkins Schools.
8. Scenario two assumes the closure of Le Phare and Queen Mary Schools.
9. The schools identified for these scenarios were chosen because their combined MOET capacities
achieve the reduction in pupil place requested by the Board to achieve a 90% utilization factor.
y.
10. The schools identified for these scenarios are geographically situated in locations on both the
eastern and western portions of the Quadrant C area.
RECOMMENDATION
That this report be received by the Board with a copy forwarded to the Minister of Education
along with the staff recommendations presented October 19, 1999.
