RE: Elementary School Office Staffing for New Schools
Trustee Sheryl MacDonald has given notice that she will move as follows at the 10
January 2000 Board meeting:
Whereas the elementary school office staffing formula for a new school is based entirely
upon enrolment at the time of opening and is not different than the staffing formula for an
established elementary school;
Whereas a new school is very different from established schools in that none of its office
operational processes have been set up;
Whereas the office staff become the first contact for all telephone calls and on site visitors
as well as everything pertaining to the school operation;
Whereas these situations or demands are well above and beyond those of office staff in an
established school where required programs, curriculum, operational processes, procedures
etc. are already in place and functioning;
Whereas this additional workload is not considered when determining the office staffing
for a new elementary school;
Whereas these additional demands are considered in establishing initial staffing for
secondary schools;
Whereas there should be consistency in practices for both panels;
THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED:
THAT provision be made in the elementary school office support staffing formula for
additional staff for the initial year of operation of new elementary schools as follows:
"During the first year of operation of an elementary school, an extra 1.0 FTE office
position may be allocated upon written request of the principal, in the second year
of operation the allocation reverts to the formula ".
