To seek approval of a new OCDSB policy for the safe arrival of elementary students. BACKGROUND: 2. Policy /Program Memorandum No. 123 requires schools boards to develop a policy statement with respect to the safe arrival.of elementary students. STATUS: 3. Safe arrival programs are in place in OCDSB elementary schools. 4. A copy of the Safe Arrival (Elementary) policy is attached for reference as Appendix A. RECOMMENDATION: That the Safe Arrival (Elementary) Policy attached as Appendix A be approved. James P. To establish principals and directives for elementary schools in the operation of a school -based safe arrival program MOET Policy /Program Memorandum No 123 requires schools boards to develop a policy statement applying to each elementary schools for the development and implementation of a safe arrival program. Impact Statements (Outline potential impacts on students, staff, community, facilities and /or other resources. Safe arrival programs are in place in OCDSB elementary schools. Nepean, ON K2H 6L3 ,�?Cn Draft to Chair's Committee 26 May 1999 for approval OTTAWA - CARLETON DISTRICT SCHOOL BOARD POLICY P. 085.SCO TITLE: SAFE ARRIVAL (ELEMENTARY STUDENTS) Date Issued: Last Revised: Authorization: Board Next Review: 05/2002 1.0 OBJECTIVE To establish principles and directives for elementary schools in the operation of a school -based safe arrival program. 2.0 POLICY 2.1 In each elementary school in the Ottawa - Carleton District School Board there shall be a school -based safe arrival program, which is defined as a system of procedures performed, together with daily school attendance - taking procedures, to account for any pupil's unexplained failure to arrive at school following reasonable efforts to make timely contact with parents, guardians, or caregivers. 2.2 Safe - arrival programs are school- based. 2.3 Through consultation with staff and school councils, school procedures shall be developed to reflect the needs and circumstances of the school. 2.4 The roles and responsibilities of all those involved should be clearly identified and documented, and communicated to parents, guardians and caregivers no later than the end of the first week of each school year. 2.5 If volunteers assist in the direct implementation of the program at the school, their role and responsibilities are to be identified in the procedures. 3.0 SPECIFIC DIRECTIVES Principals shall review procedures for the safe arrival program as necessary with their school councils. 4.0 REFERENCE DOCUMENTS MOET Policy /Program Memorandum No. 123: Safe Arrivals Board Policy P.014.SCO: School Councils Board Policy P.032.SCO: Safe Schools
