Re: Student Safety Patrols Policy

PURPOSE:
1. To seek approval of a new OCDSB policy for student safety patrols.
BACKGROUND:
2. The policy was created to provide direction and support for programs that were in place in both
former boards.
STATUS:
3. The policy supports the continuation of the program in schools where the program exists, and
provides direction to schools wishing to consider implementation of the program.
4. A copy of the Student Safety Patrols policy is attached for reference as Appendix A.
RECOMMENDATION:
That Policy P.084.SCO, Student Safety Patrols, attached as Appendix A, be approved:

PRO FORMA TO INITIATE POLICY PROJECT/DISCUSSION/REVIEW
A policy project, discussion or review can be initiated anywhere inside the organization, in the wider
community, or in response to external forces and changes. The following process will assist the Board to
focus on an area or areas of specific concern:
Policy Initiative (Please explain the objective of the proposed policy or policy review) .
To provide direction and support for a program that was in place in both former boards.
Impact Statements (Outline potential impacts on students, staff, community, facilities and /or other
resources.
In those schools where a program exists, the policy supports the continuation of the program and
provides direction to schools wishing to consider implementation of a program.
Consultation (Indicate who should be involved /consulted in developing a policy proposal or in a
review of an existing policy, and what process is recommended (e.g. random surveys, targeted input from
specific groups, open -ended input from the community at large)

TITLE: STUDENT SAFETY PATROLS

1.0 OBJECTIVE:
To establish principles and directives for schools in the operation of student safety patrols.
2.0 POLICY
2.1 The OCDSB supports the organization of student safety patrols for intersections within
the supervision of the school.
2.2 Prior to organizing student safety patrols, principals should consult with the School
Resource Officer (SRO) and Transportation regarding the appropriateness and location of
patrol sites.
2.3 Principals shall consult with their school councils when considering student safety
patrols. Such issues as scheduling and liability should be discussed at that time. The
decision to organize student safety patrols shall be made at the school level.
3.0 SPECIFIC DIRECTIVES
3.1 Principals shall review the Student Safety Patrol Program annually with the school's SRO
and the school council, with the emphasis on safety and the appropriateness of
continuing the program given the age of the students involved, the number of students \
involved, and any other concerns that may arise.
