Re: Proposed Name for the new Bridlewood North Elementary School
ORIGINATORS: Daniel M. Mason, Superintendent of School Services
Gord Hodges, Principal- designate of the new Bridlewood North E.S.
PURPOSE:
To seek the approval of trustees for the proposed name for the new Bridlewood North
elementary school.
BACKGROUND:
2. The new elementary school in Bridlewood North is scheduled to open in September 1998. It
(W will be a dual track school opening with an JK -Grade 7 configuration with plans to add Grade 8
in 1999 -2000. Under the direction of Gord Hodges, the principal- designate of the school, a
process for naming the school was set in motion in the early spring. The process followed Policy
FF (Naming of New Schools) of the former Carleton Board of Education.
Mr. Hodges sought input from the students who are scheduled to attend the new school, from
parents, from local municipal officials, and from members of the community at large. All were
given the parameters set out in the policy and invited to submit suggestions to a committee
composed of four parents, Ms. Judy Sullivan, Ms. Sandy Wynne, Ms. Ann Gordon, Mr. Tim
McLean and Lance Mitchell (Councillor, City of Kanata), Jim Libbey (Trustee for the area),
Gord Hodges (Principal- designate) and Dan Mason (Superintendent of School Services for the
area).
STATUS:
4. The committee is recommending that the new school be named W. O. Mitchell Elementary
School. Not only did the name garner the most support, but the committee felt it was
appropriate for a number of reasons including the following:
i) Schools are in the business of educating children. W. O. Mitchell was a Canadian
author who believed in, and was actively involved in, education as a university
professor.
ii) W. O. Mitchell exemplifies literacy. Literacy is one of the more important functions of
a school. Naming the school after W.O. Mitchell underlines our valuing literacy.
iii) The name allows us to celebrate our Canadian literary heritage.
iv) W. O. Mitchell wrote stories consistent with the idea of life long learning, reflecting
the transition from childhood to adulthood.
V) W. O. Mitchell Elementary School can make good use of the author's legacy in the
classrooms and in the resource centre.
RECOMMENDATION:
It is recommended that:
The new Bridlewood North elementary school be named W. O. Mitchell Elementary School.
