Subject: The AVPS School Council position on the potential closure of Riverview Alternative School Summary of Presentation: Alta Vista Public School Council has been made aware that the Administration considers AVPS to have sufficient capacity to accommodate the students of Riverview Alternative School in the event of its closure. After discussion the following motion was adopted by the School Council at its meeting of Wednesday, 9'h December; That; A. Alta Vista School Council supports the report of the Area 4 Community Working Group, specifically, that there is no significant surplus capacity in Area 4, and that we support the request for additional information put forward by CWG 4. and B. That if, despite the recommendation of the Area 4 CWG report that no school be closed in this area, the Board does proceed with the closing of Riverview Alternative School, that AVPS School Council (W will. work with the R.A.S, and other Area 4 school councils to develop a plan that would best meet the needs of our area's school communities. (Note: Motion B pre - supposes that the Separate School Board moves the McHugh Unit out of AVPS.) The presentation will elaborate on the above motion. There has been no information made available to us regarding why the findings of the Area 4 Report were disregarded and instead, a recommendation to close an Area 4 school, Riverview Alternative School, has been made by the Administration. We have not been provided with any analysis or logic to support such a recommendation. By the Administration's own criterion, that is concentrating on schools of less than 200 capacity and less than fifty percent enrolment, Rivery iew should not have been selected as it has a capacity of over 400 and an enrolment of seventy percent. With respect to AVPS; we understand that the Board directed the Administration to include the McHugh Unit classrooms on the list of rooms to be appealed to the MET. That is to say, the Board has directed that those classrooms be considered as occupied for purposes of capacity calculation_ If that is so, there is insufficient room at AVPS to accommodate the Riverview students. What is the status of the McHugh Unit? CWG 4 submitted a written list of questions on I" December which require answers before anyone would have sufficient information to make an informed decision on whether to recommend a school for closure, Where are the answers, how are informed decisions being made?
