ACCESSIBILITY OF SCHOOL BUILDINGS
(STANDARD 15)
Purpose of the Standard
To provide the Ministry with further details of the Board's multi year plan, which was previously
submitted to the Ministrv�, for improving access ibiliw for students with phvsical and sensory disabilities,
and to provide the public with this information.
Information pertaining to this standard is included on the charts Access for the Phvsically Challenged and
Accessibility Projects, September 1998 to present respectively.
Currently the Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities ACT (AODA) is preparing its' annual review
of the Accessibility Plan for publication in September 2009 in compliance with the Accessibility for
Ontarians with Disabilities Act (AODA). You can locate the review at
www.L,ov.on.ca /citizenship /accessibility.
The public can obtain and access the Ottawa - Carleton District School Board Accessibility Plan by
accessing the web -site at www.ocdsb.ca. A hard copy is available by contacting Communications and
Information Services at 596 -8211, ext. 8310.
Based on the 2006 OCDSB Accessibility Audit, cost estimates were developed for each facility to meet
AODA's 100% "barrier- free" expectations. The individual site estimates range between $101,000 and
$2.2M.
In order to fulfill the complete accessibility needs required by the AODA by 2025, an annual revenue
stream of $4.2M, totaling in excess of $80M.
Annual expenditures on accessibility for the past seven years are as follows:
2004/2005 $ 383,680.00
2005/2006 $ 700,615.00
2006/2007 $ 483,000.00
2007/2008 $ 948,902.00
2008/2009 $1,077,588.00
2009/2010 $ 703,488.00
2010/2011 $1,576,416.00
2011/2012 $ 750,000.00 (approximate to date)
Looking Forward
The Board's Accessibility Plan working group continues to meet on a regular basis in order to ensure
compliance with AODA. The five year goal is to have one Secondary and three Elementary (two
Kindergarten to grade 8, and one Intermediate) schools accessible within each geographical grouping of
schools in the district. The Board will continue to advocate for funding to support the implementation of
the AODA.
The Working Group, in conjunction with Reach Canada, has and will continue to oversee the
implementation of a training program for OCDSB front line staff on the Customer Service Standards.
