Common Course Codes for Schools
For implementation in the 1985 -86 school year
A change in Course Codes is mandated by the Ministry of Education, to
be implemented in the 1985 -86 school year.
The Ministry has issued a List of Codes for the first three places
representing all subjects, to be used across Ontario on report cards
and student transcripts.
The fourth place will represent the grade, e.g. 4 is grade 12.
The fifth place will represent the level, e.g. A is Advanced Level.
The Ottawa Board will add a sixth and seventh place where the sixth will
modify the meaning of the first three places, and where the seventh re-
presents the credit value of the course. (See attached).
Flexibility will be provided to schools in the sixth place with the use
of the digits 6, 7, 8, or 9. When chosen and used by the school, such
a digit will indicate that the course so designated stems from the same
Ministry guideline as another course offered in the school, but differs
significantly from it.
Example 1:
CEC4G -1 means Economics, Grade 12, General Level,
1 credit.
Example 2:
MAT3ABH means Mathematics, Grade 11, Advanced Level,
enriched as defined by an IPRC Committee, worth 1
credits.
Example 3:
TCW1G -1 and TCW1G -C means Woodwork, Grade 9, General
Level, the first worth 1 credit and the second worth
1/2 credit.
Example 4:
EWR3AC2 means an English Writing Co -op course worth
2 credits, matching the in- school course EWR3A -1.
The code EWR3A61 is defined by the school to be
distinctly different from EWR3A -1, but based on the
same guideline from the Ministry.

A introduire en 1'annee scolaire 1985 -1986
Le ministere de 1'lucation a ordonne la raise en vigueur de changements
aux codes de cours en l'annee scolaire 1985 -1986.
I1 a produit a cette fin une liste de codes a trois caracteres pour toutes
les matieres a employer dans toute la province sur les bulletins scolaires
et les releves de notes.
Le quatrieme caractere designera 1'annee; p. ex. le chiffre "4" representera
la douzieme annee.
Le cinquieme caractere designera le niveau de difficulte, p. ex. la lettre
"A" representera le niveau avance.
A ces codes, le Conseil scolaire d'Ottawa ajoutera un sixieme et un septieme
caracteres qui serviront a modifier la signification des trois premiers
caracteres, le septieme representant la valeur en credits du cours.

L' existence d'une sixieme colonne pouvant etre occupee par les chiffres
6, 7, 8 ou 9 assurera une certain souplesse aux ecoles. L'ecole pourra
se servir de ces chiffres pour indiquer que le cours design ainsi
s'inspire du meme programme -cadre du Ministere qu'un autre cours offert
dans 1'ecole, mais qu'il differe de fagon sensible de ce dernier.
Exemple 1
CEC4G -1 represente Economie, 12e annee, niveau general, 1 credit.
Exemple 2
MAT3ABH represente les Mathematiques, lle annee, niveau avance,
enrichies tel que le definit un comite d'identification, de
placement et de revision, 1 credit.
Exemple 3
TCW1G -1 et TCW1G -C represente Menuiserie, 9e annee, niveau general,
le premier valant 1 credit et le second un demi- credit.
Exemple 4
EWR3AC2 represente un cours intitule "English Writing" en education
cooperative valant deux credits correspondant au cours intra-
scolaire EWR3A -1. Le code EWR3A61 est defini par 1'ecole comme
etant sensiblement different du cours EWR3A -1, mais s'inspirant du
meme programme -cadre du Ministere.
