Common Course Code Structure
COURSE CODES
Each course in the secondary schools of the OBE is identified by a seven character code and title.
The first letters in the code indicate the subject
(e.g. ENGIAEI = English
The fourth space indicates the grade level
1 = Grade 9;2 = Grade 10; etc. 0=OAC

The fifth space indicates the level of difficulty

A credit is granted in recognition of
successful completion of a course that has
been scheduled for a minimum of 110 hours.
Continuing Education Adult courses are
scheduled for a minimum of 90 hours.
Summer School make -up courses are
scheduled for a minimum of 55 hours.
Pr requistes for courses are established at the
school levels.
Course outlines are available at local schools.
Please contact the Principal should you
require additional specific information about
a course. All courses have been developed
according to the requirements of the Ontario
Ministry of Education.
The sixth space indicates a course modifier

E Enriched version of an A level course
F French Immersion / Extended course
G Gifted courses in English
H Gifted bilingual courses
J French Immersion, enriched advanced level
K Arts Canterbury Courses
L E.S.L. Sheltered Unit
M For Basic -level courses indicating Modified
R Independent Enrichment
S Special Education
6,7,8,9 Used by schools to identify internal scheduling purposes
The seventh space indicates the credit values of the course.
