HomeMy WebLinkAbout07 TTFM School Climate Surveys for Parents and StudentsTell Them From Me (TTFM) School Climate Surveying Presentation for PIC Wednesday February 12th, 2014 Inclusive, Safe and Caring Programs Brett Reynolds – System Principal Matt Gagnier – Instructional Coach School Climate •Education Act requires a bullying prevention and intervention plan •Goal is to promote a positive school climate that is accepting for everyone •To support the plan, Education act requires anonymous surveying to collect data on students, parents, and staff pertaining to school climate, at least once every two years •OCDSB used the Tell Them From Me (TTFM) survey tool to conduct anonymous surveying about school climate on students in grades 4-12, to support school bullying prevention and intervention plans •School reports were available to school Principals after they closed their school surveys; District aggregate reports are now available on the OCDSB website •School Principals worked with their Safe and Accepting school teams to create bullying prevention and intervention plans •This team should include school staff, parents, community members, and students where appropriate •Principals are in the process of sharing their school reports and bullying prevention & intervention plans with their communities •OCDSB is committed to creating inclusive, safe and caring environments. •The district will be conducting the TTFM school climate survey for Grade 4-12 students again this year as part of our work on well-being, bullying prevention and intervention, and engagement. •We will also be inviting all parents to participate in an anonymous school climate survey this year •K-12, including K-3 parents whose children are not participating in the student TTFM survey, and specialized program sites •Data collected from parents and students will help inform the bullying prevention and intervention plan and ensure that the school is safe and welcoming •TTFM is completed in a computer lab during class time •It is an English-only survey •Student friendly language •Anonymous •Completely voluntary (students can opt-out or skip individual questions) •Two versions; Grade 4-6 (40 minutes), Grade 7-12 (30 minutes) We are using The Learning Bar’s Effective Schools Survey on Student Engagement and on Bullying and School Safety. TTFM Student Survey Measures •Social Engagement (belonging, using ICT, reading, positive relationships) •Institutional Engagement (homework time) •Physical Fitness (how much activity) •School Context (feeling safe, bullying) •Classroom Context (positive learning climate) •Family Context (aspirations, advocacy out of school) •Demographic Factors (socio-economic factors) •Parents will be invited by the school •Completed by going to www.tellthemfromme.com and using a login provided by the school •Anonymous, voluntary, confidential •~80 questions, ~15-20 minute completion time •Questions similar to those asked to students TTFM Parent Survey Measures (developed by the Learning Bar) •parents feel welcome •parents are informed •parents support learning at home •school supports learning •school supports positive behaviour •safety at school •inclusion at school When will this happen? •Schools schedule the survey (February-May) •Parent letter to go home •Student survey(Grade 4-12) Notice of non-consent to be returned only if parent does not want their child to complete the survey. •Parent survey invitation to be communicated at the same time •Notice of survey, with FAQ’s, is already on district website •Schools encouraged to communicate about the survey in multiple ways (eg. letter, website, newsletter, synervoice) Using the data •Reports are given to Principals 48 hours after the survey is closed –Reporting is at the aggregate level only •Safe and Accepting school teams will use data to support school climate improvement, school based bullying prevention/intervention plan, and SIPSA •TTFM will help schools get authentic and anonymous information to help make our school even more safe and welcoming.
