TITLE: LEARNING MEDIA REQUIRING APPROVAL

1.0 OBJECTIVE
To establish the procedure for obtaining Board approval for non -Trillium List
textbooks/learning media for school use.
2.0 RESPONSIBILITY
2.1 School principals
3.0 PROCEDURE
3.1 All textbooks/learning media listed in the Trillium List will be assumed to have been
approved by the Board.
3.2 Approval for textbooks/learning media not listed in the Trillium List will be sought as
follows:
a) a teacher or department head recommends a textbook/learning resource, with a
clear rationale for its selection, to the principal;
b) if the principal concurs with the recommendation, he/she submits the
textbook/learning resource to the Superintendent responsible for schools with a
completed form for approval of non-Trillium List materials (see Attachment 1);
c) as the Ministry of Education must receive submissions for approval for
September use by March 31, submissions to Superintendents responsible for
schools must be received by March 1;
d) the Superintendent responsible for the school, if satisfied that the
textbook/learning resource is appropriate, forwards the submission to the
Superintendent, Curriculum Services for presentation and recommendation to the
Board;

e) a copy of the textbooks/learning media submitted for approval will be made
available in the Trustees’ Lounge in advance of the B oard meeting;
f) If Ministerial approval is required, the Superintendent of Instruction will submit the
application to the Regional Director of Education.
