1.0 OBJECTIVE
To provide a procedure for the training of intern principals or vice-principals.
2.0 DEFINITIONS
In this procedure,
2.1 An intern principal or vice-principal is someone who has been selected for one of four
intern lists (elementary principal and vice-principal; secondary principal and vice-
principal). The intern has generally not been appointed to the level of principal or vice -
principal, but who may be appointed, because of demand, during the period when
he/she is participating in the District-based training.
2.2 An Intern Training Program is a mandatory District-based training program for all
principal/vice-principal candidates who have been successful in having their names
placed on the list.
3.0 RESPONSIBILITY
3.1 All candidates must undertake the District-based Intern Training Program.
3.2 The Intern Training Program is a program designed to assist principal and vice-principal
candidates in developing the skills and understandings they will need to fulfill their
responsibilities successfully. The program is run through the Staff Development
Division and is staffed by in-District personnel.
3.3 The content of the programs is based upon the nine criteria for selection and appraisal.
It includes, but is not limited to, training sessions on Supervision of Staff, Supervision of
Program, School Organization and Management, Working with School Councils, etc.
3.4 All candidates who are undergoing the training are evaluated at completion. Failure to
attend the program or failure to complete the requirements results in removal from the
intern list.
