As I mentioned in our telephone conversation of December 14, the parent council at Stonecrest Elementary School has formed a sub -committee in order to lobby for these students to remain at Stonecrest, until high school. It is our belief that, for several reasons of which we are willing to substantiate, this would be in the students' best interests. It is our understanding that in order to facilitate a complete program for these students, it will be necessary for both the English and the Immersion students to remain at Stonecrest. fUthough we would prefer that the school expansion be completed, we realize that this is dependant upon many factors and that decisions will not be finalized until the spring. We as parents are prepared to have the students continue at Stonecrest whether or not the funds are released in time for this expansion. It is at this time that I would like to place a formal request by the parent council sub -committee at Stonecrest Elementary School, that grade seven be implemented at Stonecrest Elementary School for September 1, 2000, We would request that all of the grade seven students, both in the English program and the Early French Immersion program be allowed to remain there in order to cant' on a full program for these students. We also request that these students be allowed to remain at Stonecrest Elementary School until they enter secondary school. IMOS HZHd0 N0 60ZL HL CT9 T YU 62: CT 00/LO/TO Survey of parents of Junior students at Stonecrest Elementary School As yoiay be aware, unless we change the board's approach, our grade 6 EFI students will be bused to the vastly overcrowded Huntley Centennial in Carp, and the rest of our grade 6 students will be bused to Fitzroy Centennial in Kinbum. The Stonecrest School council has voted to try to keep our EFI and Regular students here until high school, even without the Phase II (grade 7/8) extension. In order to lobby effectively, and to emphasize to the Board and the Ministry that we are serious, we need to know your opinion. Please fill out this form and return it tomorrow to your child's teacher. Your name, etc. is optional, but preferred. Yes, I want to keep my child (ren) at Stonecrest until high school, even if the Phase II extension is not completed in time. No, I want my grade 7/8 child(ren) to transfer to Huntley or Fitzroy. Current Programs Phi Music Fitzroy No specialist Yes & Centennial Band Huntley No specialist Yes & Centennial Band Stonecrest Unknown Unknown Design & Tech now integrated into Science program Family Studies & Music- determined by Principal available staff, etc. Results of Survey 140 • Survey of all Grade 4-6 120 parents at Stonecrest a. 100 • Objective was to 0 80 determine level of w support for Grade 7& 8 60 • Response rate of —75% r- 40 (144 out of 195) z 20 0 Level Level Level 5 4 3 s 4 • Sub -Committee Conclusions • Moving students to other schools does not improve their situation — other schools are more overcrowded — programs change from year to year — portables are inevitable — impact on community and school spirit — increased busing Sub -Committee Conclusions • Parent support for keeping students at Stonecrest for Grades 7 & 8 is very high • Success in achieving this objective will reinforce our push for Phase 2 expansion • Parent support and show of unity is required to make this happen • A concerted effort must be given over next 4-6 weeks 9 10 E • Action Plans • Board meeting Monday Jan 10, 8:OOPM — sub -committee will be making presentation — need parents to attend to show support — Lynn Scott will be making a motion to have West Carleton boundaries reviewed • Stonecrest School Council being advised • Board meeting January 24 — sub -committee will be asking question — need parent volunteers for support • Contact newspapers Parent Action Required • Volunteers to attend Jan 10 and 24 `00 meeting — sign up sheet — fill out survey if not already done so • Letters, e-mails, phone calls — list of contacts and letter content suggestions available • Student letter writing • Newspapers 12 2 • Phase 2 Expansion Status • Development fees collected through previous Carleton Board to support new school building • Current government changed rules - Board cannot get access to money • Fund at $13M - enough for about 2.5 schools • Stonecrest expansion is "earmarked" for some portion of funds • Sept `02 would be absolute earliest for opening BUT... 13 Phase 2 Expansion • Other parent groups are lobbying hard to get new schools — Goulborn-Stittsville — Urban areas • Nobody knows when money will be available • Municipal restructuring issue - impact??? • If we are not successful in keeping Grades 7 & 8 at Stonecrest the strength of argument for expansion is severely negatively impacted 14 Action Required • Lobby — Ministry of Education to have hold on money lifted — lobby local MPP's — lobby Board to make sure Stonecrest stays as high priority • Timing - Ongoing until money is available and Board decision made on where to spend Conclusion • A concerted effort has to be taken over next 6-8 weeks to ensure students stay at Stonecrest. • Losing grades 7&8 will mean no Phase 2 expansion • Starting in February we need to begin efforts on Phase 2 15 16 0
