play's 1930s setting excellently, an each character d0nnec 'unique outfits,
despite the musical's 125 costume pieces. Some of the most notable
costumes were Annie's bright silk red dress, and the diversity in the orphans'
outfits, which varied in design colour and pattern, but complemented each
other perfectly. The Sir Wilfrid Makeup Crew also created great visuals for
the musical's characters. Makeup was bold and the trends of the 1930s,
such as red lips, were represented. A complex prosthetic snout was created
for Sandy, and gave the dog a much more realistic and theatrical
appearance.
Sir Wilfrid Secondary School produced an inspiring, cheerful rendition of
Annie, and in doing so, demonstrated that one can find positivity in even the
most hard -knock life.

with the help of a live orchestra bringing to life the familiar score of the
musical. The steady movement of actors on and offstage added to the
smooth flow of the show. This masterful performance was filled with cheer
and charm.
The lead actress, Sarah Humphries, personified Annie's vivacious character
to a tee. Her constant bubbly attitude as she skipped across the stage,
singing classic song after classic song, allowed her to exude Annie's childish
personality. Not only did she sing and act with confidence, but her facial
expressions added comedy, even when she wasn't delivering her lines, which
brought a new spark to Annie.
The strong performance of Katrine Mercier as Miss Hannigan was another
key factor in the overall success of the show. Mercier turned Miss Hannigan

The efforts of the stage crew were impressive, with quick costume changes
as well as unnoticeable set changes. Annie's classic red Christmas dress was
a triumph for the costume department. The makeup and hair highlighted
each character effectively and elegantly, following the styles of the 1930s
meticulously. The prosthetic created by the makeup team for Annie's dog's
nose was whimsical and wonderful. The props used in the musical, such as
an antique phone, an old radio, and a timeless wheelchair, added appeal. The
unfortunate sound issues during the first act were rectified by the quality of
the second act.
Sir Wilfrid Laurier Secondary School's rendition of this classic musical was
superb. The ever -energetic cast pulled together a musical with a live
orchestra, complicated choreography, and time-honoured songs to create a
most enjoyable evening of theatre.

Optimism is essential to keep
spirits alive, especially in a time
like the Great Depression.
Looking forward to tomorrow and
believing it will be a better day is
the essence of Annie. This
optimism was portrayed
wonderfully by Sir Wilfrid Laurier
Secondary School's rendition of
this classic musical.
Originally based on an old comic
strip called "Little Orphan Annie';
the Broadway show premiered in
1977 and has been followed by many movie adaptations. The show follows
the story of the titular Annie (Sarah Humphries), in her journey to try to find
her parents who abandoned her as a baby. The foil to Annie's attempts is the
head of her orphanage, Miss Hannigan (Katrine Mercier). Along the way,
Annie encounters and befriends billionaire Oliver Warbucks (Patrick
Hessian), and his secretary Grace Farrell (Amanda Koskoletos), who not only
help find her parents but also provide for her a family of her own.
Playing the lead character of the show, Humphries had an important job that
she did very well. Humphries was very busy, spending almost every scene
onstage, but she delivered her lines and sang with ease. Her performance as
Annie was satisfying — it was evident that the other orphans truly looked up
to her as their leader. Towards the end of the show, the tape for her
microphone came off, but Humphries endured and covertly fixed the tape
herself.
Mercier was an ideal Miss Hannigan, suitably speaking with equal amounts
sarcasm and New York City accent. Her depiction of Miss Hannigan was
remarkable and had the entire room on their toes throughout the
performance, culminating in "Little Girls," where Mercier struck the audience
with her singing. Hessian played an excellent Oliver Warbucks, not only
acting well comedically but also emotionally, as Hessian showed the softer
side of Warbucks when Annie was going to live with her "real" parents.

The standout performance of the night, however, was brought to life by
Andrew Parsche, as sidekick Sandy the Dog. The costume was a onesie
completed by an excellent face prosthetic created by the Makeup Crew.
Parsche's humorous reactions to the scenes unfolding around him,
particularly facial expressions, were well timed and added an extra layer to
the comedic aspects of the show, despite not having any actual verbal lines.
The 27 -piece student orchestra played the difficult original score
impressively, undeterred by hard key changes. Despite some problems with
the microphones, including scratching and tape coming off the actors, the
problems were fixed quickly and subtly by the cast and crew. Although the
bright spotlights could at times be abrupt against the soft house lights, the
lighting, in general, was done thoroughly, with appropriate mood lighting to
showcase different times of day and emotions.
The Secret Sewciety crew delivered impeccable costumes for the entire
cast, including almost three costumes for each actor and extremely quick
changes. Annie's iconic red dress was brilliant, and the previously mentioned
costume for Sandy was splendid. The Makeup Crew, led by Matt Maclnnis-

Leonard, used makeup wonderfully to reflect the time period, but also added
some modern makeup to accentuate faces, and added freckles to Annie for
a quintessential redhead look. The choreography, though complicated, was
timed and performed well by the actors, particularly "Hard Knock Life';
"Hooverville" and the tap number during the orphan's rendition of "Fully
Dressed"
Through clever costumes, electric choreography, and bright red hair, Sir
Wilfrid Laurier Secondary School reminded everyone that family found along
the way can be better than anticipated, and that one only needs optimism
and a smile to be happy.

A perky and hopeful 11 -year-old
orphan wanders the streets of
New York City in search of her
long lost parents. What could
possibly go wrong? In Sir Wilfrid
Laurier's theatre production of a
1977 classic musical, Annie, the
journey of a cheerful little girl
comes to life in a heartwarming
production filled with marvellous
acting and musicality.
The musical Annie follows a
young girl who was left in an
orphanage at a very young age with only one thing in her mind: finding her
parents. After being invited to the home of a multibillionaire, Oliver
Warbucks, for Christmas, Annie begins to discover how she can love and be
loved even through her difficult life.
The overall acting and portrayal of the characters in Annie was strong,
although the most prominent aspect of this performance was the execution
and accuracy of the score and musical numbers. There was a total of fifteen
dance numbers performed by the actors and actresses in this production.
The choreography was exceptionally created and was performed at such a

high level that one would hardly be able to tell that this was a high school
musical. At the outset of the show, there were some feedback problems with
the mics on stage, but by the second act, all of the problems were fixed and
there were no noticeable complications concerning the sound. Adding to
this, there were countless well-timed and appropriate sound effects that
were imperative and helped drive the plot of the musical.
Sarah Humphries, the lead actress who played Annie, portrayed her
character in a realistic way. She faced the challenge of imitating an eleven -
year -old and demonstrated her acting prowess by staying in character
throughout the whole production. Humphries also exemplified her powerful
yet emotional voice in her countless solos in the musical. This was especially
shown in the second song, "Maybe," where her voice exhibited great emotion
while keeping in her character as a young girl.

Another memorable voice that shone in many of the songs was Katrine
Mercier, who played the antagonist Miss Hannigan. Her powerful voice and
growl demonstrated her embodiment of the fierce character. Mercier
depicted her passionate character in an authentic way by keeping the same
emotion and anger in her actions and voice throughout her singing and

speaking components. A talented actress that brought many aspects to this
musical was Serena Ferzli, who played the roles of Sophie, Bonnie, Star To
Be, and one of the orphans. Even though she did not have a main role, her
presence on stage was palpable and her strong and clear voice added to the
overall production.
The Sir Wilfrid Laurier orchestra did a superiorjob in replicating the classic
score of the Annie musical. There were minor, if any, faults made by the
orchestra that were not noticeable throughout the production. Adding to
this, the orchestra only consisted of twenty-seven members but
incorporated many of the components of the musical score as well as
adjusted to the frequent key changes.
Sir Wilfrid Laurier's production of Annie was a great success, as it had a
combination of well -executed musical numbers and well -performed acting.
Sir Wilfrid Laurier succeeded in offering a heartwarming production that
captured the ambitions of a young girl finally discovering where she belongs.
