TITLE: STUDENT ACCIDENTS —INSURANCE AND REPORTING

1.0 OBJECTIVE
To protect and safeguard the well-being of students while at school or while engaged in
school-sponsored activities.
2.0 POLICY
2.1 The Board has a responsibility to protect and safeguard the well-being of students while
at school or while engaged in school-related activities.
2.2 It is important that the Board safeguard itself against litigation on the grounds of liability.
2.3 The cost of student accident insurance shall be the sole responsibility of
parents/guardians or of students, if 18 years of age or over.
2.4 The Board shall make information about student accident insurance available to
parents/guardians, or students if 18 years of age or over, but neither sponsors nor
endorses such insurance.
3.0 SPECIFIC DIRECTIVES
3.1 The principal of a school shall:
a) report an accident involving a student to the parent(s)/guardian(s) of the student,
and report to the Ontario School Boards’ Insurance Exchange (OSBIE) all
accidents involving a student or students;
b) safeguard the well-being of any student involved in an accident in the school;
c) for insurance purposes, retain consent forms until the end of the school year
following the year for which consent was given for all programs requiring specific
consent including, but not limited to, field trips, excursions, educat ional tours and
exchanges, Co-operative Education, sports programs, etc.; and

d) ensure that parents/guardians or students, if 18 years of age or over, are aware
of the nature of the specific activities for which they are giving consent.
3.2 The Director of Education/Secretary of the Board is authorized to issue such procedures
as may be necessary to implement this policy.
