The province has announced $ 37 million for a
public high school in Stittsville — the culmination
of a 20 -year lobbying effort by parents and the
community.
During a visit at Stittsville Public School Friday, Ottawa West-Nepean MPP
Bob Chiarelli said the new high school will accommodate about 1,353
students from Grades 7 to 12.
"It's absolutely wonderful we will be getting this school at last,"said
trustee Lynn Scott, who represents West Carleton —
March/Stittsville/Rideau-Goulbourn. "But this is only one piece of a much
bigger puzzle"
The announcement has been a long time coming. Stittsville, which has a
projected population of about 70,000 in the next decade, does not have a
public high school. Parents began lobbying for one about 20 years ago.
There is already one Catholic high school and one French Catholic high
school in Stittsville. Students who want to attend a public school have had
to take a bus to the aging South Carleton High School in nearby
Richmond. Built in 1952, it has about 1,100 students with a capacity of
about 1,400. Those who don't want to make the trip have been migrating
to the Catholic high school, Sacred Heart, which now has more than 1,100
students in Grades 9 to 12 and almost 600 students in Grades 7 and 8.
The public high school project finally hit the top of the Ottawa -Carleton
Public School Board's wish list in May 2016.
Friday's announcement stirred up excitement in Stittsville. The school
board has two potential sites set aside for a high school — one on Robert
Grant Avenue between Abbott Street East and Fernbank Road and
another in the Fairwinds area north of Hazeldean Road. The final decision
will depend on servicing and formal approval. The school board is aiming
to open the school in September 2021.
"If we could do it any faster than that, I would be delighted. But it has to
be shepherded through all of the city approvals first," said Scott.
Meanwhile, there will also be lengthy consultation about what it means for
all schools, not only in Stittsville, but also in the rural areas including

Goulbourn and Rideau, as well as the growing villages of Richmond and
Manotick.
"There are no simple answers for how we'll do it," said Scott. "There will
be some fairly intensive consultation to make sure every school has a
viable population"
Glen Gower, who has a daughter in Grade 5 and another in Grade 7, said
the announcement is what everyone is Stittsville was talking about on
Friday.
"There are a lot of kids who move into the Catholic system at Grade 7,"
said Gower, adding that the number of Grade 7 classes at Sacred Heart
was higher than at Goulbourn Middle School. "This will definitely have an
impact on decision-making."
"There has been a core group of parents who have been calling officials,
running petitions, going to school board meetings. I have lived in Stittsville
for nine years. This has been a concern as long as I can remember. It's
been a long journey."

Would it not be great to have an election once a year. Just look at all the things you will get from
pur Lieberal friends.

You forget that it was Harris and the Conservaturds that gutted the school system back in
the day too. Every party is the same at the end of the day.

What I find amazing is this is standard operating procedures with the Liberals and it
seems to work. The voters miss this fact every election.

This is a decision that should have been made several years ago. Holding it off until the start of an
election campaign is yet another reason Wynne and company must go go go.
