Plus other letters to the editor - The Globe and Mail Elizabeth May, Leader, Green Party of Canada PROFESSORS, 65 -PLUS Re Ontario's Professors Are Retiring Later, Study Finds (March 6): Full-time professors are not a greedy, heartless and unscrupulous bunch, but individuals who, after more than 30 years of commitment to their discipline and students, care about their legacy and higher education's future. In many instances, retirement has become a bargaining tool, with older full-time faculty refusing to retire until the administration ensures their positions will by replaced with tenure -track academic jobs for PhD grads. This is a reality that can hardly be immediately apparent in statistics. Yet, as any investigative journalist knows, "objective" facts and numbers alone often fail to provide an accurate picture. AND BULLETS Re Teachers With Guns (letters, March 8): Apart from the fact that the idea is repulsive, what chance would a teacher armed with a pistol have against an automatic rifle? A would-be school shooter, knowing that the teacher might be armed, is likely to make the teacher their first target — dead before the teacher's gun is out of the drawer or holster.
