It used to be that for the safety and security of a gov't job one was paid a respectable wage plus the nice pension and perks. No risk. If one wanted to go for big money, you went to the private sector and took the risks. The last 4-5 decades our governments decided that civil service wages should "lead" the nation, should show business how to pay people. Of course, govt doesn't have to take any risk, it's easy, just tax the bejeezus out of the private sector to pay for it all. If superintendents' compensation packages are negotiated by local school board members they should be supported and guided by professionals knowledgeable in these types of negotiations. All to common these days for the disparity in compensation and benefits between the top administrators of public and private companies/organisations and the common employee to be astronomically out of line; especially considering the ease at which these "top dogs" can escape any form of accountability.
