Photo radar could be ready for some Ottawa school
zones in 2019 after the city analyzes traffic data
and decides what kind of camera mounts to use.
Traffic staff told councillors on the transportation committee Wednesday
that the city is still waiting for word from the province about when the law

allowing photo radar will come into effect. The city is involved with local
and provincial working groups on the rollout.
The city has so far collected traffic data from 72 of 370 schools. Data
collection will resume in September, with the city hoping to have all of the
information by the start of winter.
The provincial government last year passed legislation that allows
municipalities to use "automated speed enforcement," such as photo
radar, in school zones and community safety zones. However, the province
hasn't said when the law will come into force.
In the meantime, the City of Ottawa is pulling together the speed data and
trying to decide what kind of photo radar infrastructure to try out.
Cameras could be mounted in vehicles, trailers, or in permanent roadside
fixtures.

The majority of city council in May 2016 voted in favour of asking the
province for the option to use photo radar in school zones.
It appears the new Progressive Conservative provincial government will let
municipalities keep its photo radar plan.
Ontario Transportation Minister John Yakabuski's office sent a statement
in response to a question about the government's plans regarding photo
radar used by municipalities.
"The safety of road users is a top priority for the Ministry of
Transportation and we look forward to ongoing discussions with our
municipal partners to improve road safety in school zones," the statement
says. "Municipalities are in the best position to determine what needs to
be done in order to improve road safety around schools to protect our
children."

Added Yakabuski's office: "Photo radar on provincial highways is nothing
more than a cash grab, the province will not bring back photo radar."
Committee recommends neighbourhood 'gateway' speed limit signs
There could be blanket speed limits for neighbourhoods if council signs
off on a recommended policy later this month.
The transportation committee on Wednesday approved a plan to have
"gateway" speed limit signs, now that the province allows municipalities
to create speed limits lower than 50 km/h and post the speed limits at
entry and exit points of neighbourhoods.
Because it would cost about $1.6 million for new neighbourhood gateway
signs across the city, only one area per ward would get gateway signs by
the end of 2019. The city has identified $50,000 from the 2018 budget
and the upcoming 2019 budget to make the signs. Councillors will help
staff identify the areas.
Council will be asked to sign off on the recommended policy on Aug. 29.
