While you organized a union rally to declare yourselves omnipotent on sex education, math scores continue to go in the wrong direction in Ontario. The latest results show that our poor grades are worse than before. The very minute that Ford put a hold on the controversial sex -ed curriculum, teachers collectively freaked out. ETFO president Sam Hammond said, "Teachers will not be muzzled by a government whose political agenda takes precedence over the protection and education of their students" He said they were marshalling their legal team. "We will vigorously defend members who continue to follow the 2015 health curriculum and will pursue all options to respond appropriately to the government's reckless behaviour." The latest EQAO results show the continuation of a five-year slide in math results among elementary students. Only 61% of Grade 3 students and 49% of Grade 6 students met the provincial standard — a 'B' grade — in 2017-18 EQAO testing. So what is the issue here, teachers? Where is the concern? Where is the 'we know best, and by god we care so much about the children that we will do whatever it takes; attitude? What exactly do teachers care about? Politics over child welfare? Politics over professionalism? As important as sex -ed may be to that end — and it is — math is vital. Some of our kids may grow up never having sex. They may take vows of celibacy, for example. That will be up to them. But no one gets through this life successfully without using math. That is not a choice. You teachers seem competent in math yourselves given how well you calculate wages, benefits and sick days. And by the way, if you can't teach math and you don't seem to care that you can't teach math, why should we believe you are so competent to teach sex -ed? If you think you are so important that you outrank your bosses on sex- ed, while too dim to be consistent enough to take the same attitude on math, what makes you qualified to teach anything? What makes you think that sort of transparently inconsistent militancy is a good lesson for students? I am sorry if you think I am teacher bashing, but it is your hypocritical, angry action on sex -ed, compared to your comparative inaction on math, that shames teachers. Not me. And if you are a teacher reading this and thinking it is unfair to lump all teachers together in this argument, speak up. Go public against your union.
