The students of West Carleton Secondary School gave Dunrobin-area
families a Halloween they'll never forget.
Knowing there's no way it could be a regular Halloween night for the
tornado -devastated community, the high school students gave young
kids a fully decorated, climate -controlled trick -or -treat bonanza on
Wednesday. Families streamed through the doors, packing the halls
with tiny witches, princesses, firefighters and Iron Men, all stuffing
their sacks with sweets.
School staff brought the idea to the student council and student
leaders jumped into action. Community associations asked
businesses to donate candy. The United Way chipped in, too.

Student council co -presidents Sam Sharp, 16, and Sylvia Qi, 17, said it
was easy to convince more than 100 of their peers to help turn the
school into a big Halloween fun house with games, movies, face
painting, crafts and a haunted house.
"It was quite a bit of work but it felt so good just having the entire
school community come together and be able to work on it," Sharp
said.

"I just knew this is something that had to happen for the community
to the support the people who have lost a lot from the tornado and
make sure Halloween is still fun for the kids;" Qi said.
Angele and Alan Taylor were in the doorway of a classroom handing
out candy. They are one of the fortunate families still living in their
Dunrobin home, which was damaged by the tornado. The Taylors
wanted to be with the community at the high school participating in
Halloween.

"I just find that it's the community that keeps us going;" Angele Taylor
said. "Just seeing that everyone is doing good and getting to see your
neighbours that you're not seeing in the streets anymore, it just puts
a smile on your face and you just know it's going to be OK. It's just
going to take a while, but we'll get back to it:'
People have stepped up to help this rural Ottawa community.
The West Carleton Disaster Relief program, made up of local
community associations, reported Wednesday that it has
received $75,565 in donations. Earlier this month, the program
distributed $61,000 across 122 registered families.

At the high school, vice-principal Caroline Kitchen said students have
wanted to help the community rebuild, but they didn't know how to
help if they don't have money to donate.

Event organizers didn't realize at first the greater impact of the
tornado on Halloween. Families from the greater rural area
traditionally drive into Dunrobin on Halloween night to let their kids go
door-to-door in the friendly community.
"We just thought this would help fill a gap this year because when you
drive by, you realize kids can't be out in that neighbourhood trick -or -
treating and the families don't necessarily have the time or energy to
put a Halloween together, so we wanted to give them an opportunity
to still gather as a community and not have to travel too far;" Kitchen
said.

Students and staff were giving out candy from 30 classrooms. Little
trick -or -treaters zipped door to door, filling their candy sacks as the
Ghostbusters theme song and Michael Jackson's Thriller played over
the public address system.
In one classroom, Jennifer Charriere was with her daughters, Kaleia,
6, Isabelle, 4, and 17 -month-old Vivienne, decorating Halloween
cookies. The family moved to the community from Abbotsford, B.C.,
on Sept. 20. The tornado hit Dunrobin the next day. They were living
in a hotel at the time, waiting for their furniture, and their home
outside Dunrobin was lucky not to sustain damage.
"What an experience," Charriere said. "But seeing this community pull
together like that, we knew we chose the right one to be in, that's for
sure. A pretty amazing one."
Seeing the families fill the school made the school's student leaders
proud.
"The work is worth it," Qi said. "Just making people smile makes my
heart happy."
