OCDSB 452S Leave of Absence Without Pay – Sept 2018
If you are interested in applying for a full or partial leave of absence without pay for the coming school year please
complete the attached leave request form. Leaves of absence are approved in advance of the following school year. This
includes leaves for Semester II.
Eligibility - To request a leave of absence without pay, you must have been continuously employed as a Secondary
contract teacher with OCDSB for at least two (2) years immediately prior to the effective date of the leave. A teacher on
any form of leave is not eligible for any other form of leave until the expiry of the initial leave period.
Period of Leave – Leaves, including extensions, shall be granted for a full school year or partial school year provided
the leave request is submitted to Human Resources by March 1st and the leave commences and ends to coincide with the
beginning and end of the school year or semester as defined by the school year calendar. Part time leaves shall be
granted provided the leave request is submitted by March 1st.
Leave Approval - Please complete the attached leave form and submit it to your Principal to confirm their awareness
of the request. Please forward the authorized leave form to Human Resources, no later than the Collective Agreement
deadline.
Leave Denial - If your leave request is not approved, you may request in writing the reasons for the denial.
Seniority during Leave – In accordance with the Collective Agreement, there shall be no interruption to continuous
service for seniority.
Experience Credit during Leave - You shall not accumulate further experience during the period of leave.
Benefits Costs during Leave - Once the leave of absence has been approved you will be sent a benefits
statement outlining your LTD coverage. You will be asked to confirm that you wish to continue LTD during your leave and
a monthly direct withdrawal will be established to collect the benefit premiums from the same back account you receive
your pay. If you are taking a partial leave without pay, LTD premiums will continue to be deducted from your regular pay
during your leave and you will not be issued a benefit statement.
For any benefits you have with OTIP you must contact them directly. You can reach OTIP at 1-866-783-6847.
Opportunities during Leave - If you apply for a position, and make yourself available for interviewing, your
consideration shall not be affected by absence on your leave. If you are selected for a position you may be required, at
the option of the Employer, to terminate your leave to accept the position.
Communication While on Leave – In addition to the requirements of Article L15.01(h) Teachers on leave shall
maintain communication with the Employer to provide updated contact information, and respond to reasonable requests
for information.
Pension Purchase for Leave Period – You may continue your pension contributions during your leave (full-time
leave only). Payroll will inform TPP about your coming absence through our regular reporting process. If you are
registered for iAccess Web, the TPP’s secure member website, you can go online (www.otpp.com) to investigate your
buyback options and for further information. You can also call TPP at 1-416-226-2700 or 1-800-668-0105 if you are not
registered. If you are taking a partial leave, you will not be eligible to purchase TPP credit for your absence unless you are
working one semester and taking the other semester off on an approved leave of absence.
Right of Return from Leave - You will have right of return upon completion of your leave, to the school from which
you left, subject to surplus/redundancy procedures.
